This course provides students with reading strategies to increase vocabulary, improve reading comprehension skills, and raise reading rates, as well as study strategies needed for successful college performance.

Assignments include  readings and quizzes in the textbook, Active Reading Skills, by Kathleen T. McWhorter, and in an online resource, MyReadingLab; and a final exam.

Learning objectives for the course include:

• Learn to apply course material to improve reading, thinking, problem solving, and decision-making
• Develop reading skills to use context clues to determine word meaning, locate explicit and implied main ideas, identify supporting details, recognize patterns of organization, recognize tone and bias, and understand inferences in college level texts.
• Improve reading comprehension scores.
• Acquire practice in learning by asking questions and seeking answers.
• Learn to analyze and critically evaluate ideas, arguments, and points of view.
