English 101 Composition I

This course offers instruction and guided practice in the skills, research, and documentation needed for effective academic writing. The text for the course is Axelrod & Cooper’s Concise Guide to Writing, 3rd Ed. NY: Bedford/St. Martins, 2002.

Writing assignments include personal anecdote, explanatory essay, article summary, annotated research articles, explanatory essay, evaluative essay, and researched position paper.

Learning objectives for the course include:

  • Students will write effectively and responsibly and will understand and interpret the written expression of others.
  • Students will recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, organize, critically evaluate, and effectively use information from a variety of sources with intellectual integrity. . Students will support their researched texts with quotations, paraphrases, and summaries accurately, using appropriate citation practices.
  • Students will use the processes, forms, and styles of writing appropriate to academic communication and composition.
  • Students will complete assignments using appropriate computer technologies, including word processing, electronic presentation software, web browsing, electronic mail, and online an electronic discussion board. Bibliographic software is optional.
