English 208 Documentation & Presentation

This course covers the principles of writing clear instructions and documentation for computer programs and systems, as well as the development of effective oral presentations. Assignments are designed to teach students how to write materials for the computer industry and how to present ideas orally.

Writing assignments include  one major written project, a software manual, and a major oral presentation. Supporting assignments include professional memos,  tasks lists,  collaborative tutorial, audience analysis, document specifications, proposal, usability testing.

Learning objectives for the course include:

  • Students will understand the importance of good grammar and mechanics when writing computer instructions.
  • Students will understand the critical importance and elements of an audience analysis before beginning a writing project.
  • Students will write a clear set of instructions for a chosen software program, aimed at a specific audience.
  • Students will create a document prototype and final copy of a software manual using FrameMaker.
  • Students will analyze the strengths and weaknesses of a professionally prepared computer hardware or software manual.
