Philosophy Activities

Complete a summary chart of various philosophies of education and write your own philosophy of education (this will eventually be posted as your philosophy of education on your course web site). Please consult your textbook, some web resources, and/or conduct your own internet and/or library search.

Your two tasks are listed below.

Task 1: You may work in groups on this if you want, but complete the following summary chart which you can download in Word format.  As an example of what to do, the first four rows have been completed for you (courtesy of the Dr. Bishop's Spring 2000 class).  Once you have completed the chart, send it to me electronically. Please make sure that you record the sources you consulted in appropriate citation format beneath the chart.

Task 2: Write a 2-3 page essay describing your philosophy of education.  You should consider your audience to be the reviewers who will examine your portfolio for admission to the College of Education. You will continually revise your philosophy of education during your program of study so that when you graduate, you have a clear philosophy of education that tells prospective employers what you believe and how you implement your beliefs in educational settings.  Thus, while you need not use technical philosophy terms such as metaphysics/ontology, epistemology, or axiology, your essay should clearly indicate your beliefs about reality, the means by which knowledge is obtained, your values about what ought to be, and, in keeping with the Conceptual Framework of the College of Education. You can also locate this from the College of Education homepage and then clicking on policies and then on conceptual framework.

When completed, send me a copy and keep a copy and be prepared to post it to you portfolio website.
