This
is a map, which provides an idea of where we will be traveling in China.
As you can see, it is a fairly straight shot from Shanghai to Xi'an.
However, by train, the trip takes about 15 hours. We will be riding in
'soft bed' compartments, which are private (4 to a room) and fairly
comfortable. The trip should take overnight, therefore no hotel will be
needed for that evening. |

is the view along Nanjing Road, Shanghai's equivalent of New York's 5th
Avenue. The tall tower in the background (with the red globes) is
the Oriental Pearl Tower, the tallest radio tower in the world. The
street is colorful during the day, but at night is it stunning. |

The Bell Tower and Drum Tower in the city of
Xi'an date back to the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Four streets radiate from
the Bell Tower, extending to the north, south, west and east. The Drum

In the lower reaches
of the Yangtze and on the shores of Lake Taihu lies the 2500-year-old city
of Suzhou, the cradle of Wu culture.
Talking about
Suzhou, people would mention the old saying: "Paradise in Heaven,
Suzhou and Hangzhou on earth."
The natural scenery
of hills and waters in Suzhou is as charming as a delicate beauty. Of the
whole area, 10 per cent is cultivated fields, 30 per cent hills, and the
rest covered with water.
Streets and alleys
in Suzhou extend side by side with canals. Small bridges and flowing
waters, white walls and dark gray roof tiles match one another in tranquil
elegance. As a poem describes, " On arriving in Suzhou you behold:
Houses are all pillowed on water's edge." The gentle waters make the
prominent urban scenery.
The poetic and
picturesque Suzhou gardens are a typical demonstration of simple elegance,
with intriguing scenes found in every season and in all weathers.
Endowed with
