non-academic interests

Music
Music is both a pastime and a passion
Piano:  I am the proud owner of a Yamaha G-2.
Harpsichord:  I built a basic Zuckerman in the late 60s, while I was in college.

Woodworking
I have designed and built several pieces of furniture from a ratcheting music stand and footstool to several dressers, tables and clocks. My favorite cabinet wood is cherry and I'm drawn to Shaker and Mission-style furniture. My latest major project was a spindle bed.

Trains
Model Railroading: I'm valiantly trying to recreate an idealized part of West Virginia and the B&O Railroad during the steam to diesel transition era.
For more information about the B&O, check out this info on their railroad museum.
If you prefer full-sized trains, check out my photo gallery of steam trains that I've photographed and/or ridden behind.

Fishing
It's true that a bad day of fishing beats a good day at work.
Fly Fishing and Fly Tying:  I caught this bug a few years ago in the Black Hills and have fished for trout in South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado.

Ohio State University Sports
Ohio State Buckeye Football and Basketball:  I got my advanced degrees from Purdue, but my heart is, and always will be, in Columbus.

Marching Band
I was a "band dad" for seven years, helping with the Sioux Falls Lincoln High School Marching Band Stadium Crew. For two years I was the site's webmaster. Now I follow the University of Nebraska Marching Band; my youngest daughter was a Rank Leader in the Flagline her last two years of college. Her fiancé is a music education major so I hope to have another band to follow in the near future.

wabash cannonball steam locomotive
Steam locomotives of all sizes are another interest.
I got this shot of a modern-day Wabash Cannonball
outside Lafayette, Indiana.
