I am beginning my sixth year as an instructor and head volleyball coach at Dakota State University. The fall of 2005 will be my 17th year of teaching. During those 17 years I have taught in two high schools and one university. I began my teaching career in Rangely, Colorado. Rangely had 200 students in grades 9 –12. I taught English at the high school, and my first year at Rangely, I was the jv/frosh volleyball coach. Beginning my second year I was the head volleyball coach. During my four years as head coach, we won or tied for the league championship each year. My last two years we qualified for the state tournament and finished fourth in 1992. I left Rangely in 1993 and after completing my master's degree at the University of Northern Colorado, I moved to South Dakota. I was an assistant coach at the University of South Dakota for two seasons.
I moved to Sioux Falls and began teaching and coaching at Sioux Falls Washington High School where I taught from 1994 - 2000. My first three years I was in the English department. Beginning with my fourth year I moved into the physical education department. I taught Diverse Fitness, Team Sports, Walkasize, Advanced Weight Training, and Fitness Frenzy.
Along
with my teaching responsibilities, I
was
the head volleyball coach at Washington.
In six years we qualified for the state
tournament each year.
Our highest finish at the state tournament
was
second place (1998, 1999, 2000).
I
graduated from the University of Northern Colorado
in Greeley, Colorado with a
bachelor’s degree in English Education. My
minor is coaching/physical education. I also earned a master’s degree from UNC in Athletic
Administration.
Through all my travels from Colorado to South Dakota I had the coolest dog ever--DC. Right before Thanksgiving of 2002 I had to put her to sleep after having her for 13 years. She was a great dog! In the spring of 2002 I added two additions to my clan--Mattie and Shep. In fall of 2004 I added Gannon to the clan; I was given him by my niece Elizabeth.
As for the people side of my life--my family includes my parents (dad and stepmother) and my mom, two brothers, a sister, two stepbrothers, a stepsister, and seven nieces and nephews. After being away from home for about 20 years, home moved closer to me when my Dad and step-mom moved out to South Dakota. I tell myself it was because they missed me, but I think it was because my dad wanted to be closer to good fishing and lots of golf courses! I'm not getting into the brother/sister in law thing just suffice it to say I have lots of them as well.
