A.  Prefix, Number, & Title:  MUAP 152-02, Applied Music - Band

B.  Credit Hours:  1.0 Semester Hour

 C.  Approved Course Description:  Individual instruction on wind and percussion instruments for beginners to advanced collegiate students to learn instruments of their choice.

D.  Prerequisites:  None beyond a desire to learn.

E.  Additional Course Information:

Freedom in Learning Statement:  Students are responsible for learning the content of any course of study in which they are enrolled.  Under Board of Regents and University policy, student academic performance shall be evaluated solely on an academic basis and students should be free to take reasoned exception to the data or views offered in any course of study.  It has always been the policy of Dakota State University to allow students to appeal the decisions of faculty, administrative, and staff members and the decisions of institutional committees.  Students who believe that an academic evaluation is unrelated to academic standards but is related instead to judgment of their personal opinion or conduct should contact the dean of the college which offers the class to initiate a review of the evaluation.           

Procedures:  A half-hour lesson each week for a full semester is needed per 1.0 semester credit.  Each student must arrange the weekly time with the band instructor.  Students should spend a reasonable amount of time in practice.

Policies:  A lesson should happen each week.  Lessons may be rearranged with the PRIOR approval of the instructor.

Withdrawal:  November 19, 2007 is the last day for withdrawal from this class and receive a (W).  Otherwise it is an F.

F.  Text Books & Other References:  Methods & Solo literature appropriate to the instrument being studied will be assigned.  These materials are sometimes available from our music library.  Occasionally, it may need to be acquired by the student.

G.  Computer Skills Used:  Internet access will be needed for researching literature for private study instrument.

H.  Learning Objectives:  Each student will be able to:

                Master basic fingering/slide technique

                Perform scales/rudiments appropriate to their level of experience

                Produce a good tone quality and listen for accurate intonation

                Understand and use correct articulations

                Prepare and perform a level-appropriate solo for a student recital

I.  Instructional Methodologies:  One-on-one instruction, modeling, and feedback.

J.  Course Outline:  (Time/Material Sequence)  Each student will have a specialized course of study customized to meet individual needs for musical growth. Most students will prepare a solo for performance at a general student recital during finals week at the end of the semester.

L.  Evaluation Procedure:  Grades are assigned on the basis of preparation, improvement, and attendance.  Students are encouraged to take part in the end-of-semester recital.
