Governor, State of Ohio

March 16, 2009

Dear Honorable Governor Strickland:

On behalf of the State of Ohio National Youth Sports Programs that have previously operated, we are asking for your support in restoring some funding at the state level for our summer programs. The NYSP has operated with federal funding from DHHS for forty years with The Ohio State University being the very first program to operate a summer NYSP. Other universities that have offered these programs with and without funding include: Case Western University, University of Toledo, Youngstown State University, Cleveland State University, Kent State University, University of Akron, University of Dayton and Wittenburg University. The NYSP is staffed by dedicated professionals and provides educational and recreational activities to economically disadvantaged youth ages 10-16.

The Bush Administration cut funding in 2005 and many of the 210 universities throughout the nation continued to operate NYSP with private donations. We would like you, Governor Strickland, to be the leader in the nation by allocating some funding for NYSP in the State of Ohio. With the growing family needs, our program is vital in providing daily exercise, a free medical physical, education, free lunch, and a constructive use of leisure time in a safe and nurturing environment.

If your schedule permits, we would like to have an opportunity to meet with you to provide you with an overview of NYSP. We would also like to extend an invitation to you to visit one of the Ohio NYSP summer programs so that you can see the impact of NYSP on the faces of our participants and observe the quality of our programming.

Respectfully,

Mr. Dennis Harris
