Description:
"The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) is a patriotic and educational
organization similar to the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) and officially recognized
as its legal successor. The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War was known as the Sons
of Veterans of the United States of America when it was formed in 1881 by Major A.P.
Davis. President Warren G. Harding and many other prominent men have been enthusiastic
members of the Order. The Order was incorporated by Act of Congress approved August 20,
1954. General of the Army Douglas MacArthur led the list of incorporators and Major
General Ulysses S. Grant III served as Commander-in-Chief that year.
"The purpose of the SUVCW is to perpetuate the memory of the Grand Army of the
Republic and of the men who saved the Union in 1861 to 1865; to assist in every way
practicable in the preservation and making available for research of documents pertaining
to the Grand Army of the Republic and its members; to cooperate in doing honor to all
those who have patriotically served our country in any war; and to teach patriotism, the
duties of citizenship, the true history of our country, and the love and honor of our
flag.
"The SUVCW participates with other patriotic organizations in the proper
observance of our national holidays, especially Memorial Day (MAY 30); seeks out and marks
the graves of Civil War Veterans; observes the care and upkeep of Civil War memorials and
brings any failure to do so to the attention of the proper authorities.
"Eligibility for membership in the SUVCW is open to male descendants (sons,
grandsons, great grandsons, nephews, grand nephews, great grand nephews, etc.), not less
than fourteen years of age, of soldiers, sailors or marines who were regularly mustered
and served honorably in, or who were honorably discharged from the Army or Navy of the
United State during the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865, and who have never been convicted
of any heinous crime. Ancestral proofs are necessary for membership.
"Currently, we number nearly 4000 members in 135 Camps among 19 Departments across the nation. There is a like number of women in our Auxiliary. We have a Membership-at-Large for those individuals who wish to affiliate when no local Camp or Department is available. Our one-time application fee is $20 and annual dues are $15."
